My name is Hazel Jude Seida! Hazel came from my dads nick name “hazel eyes”. Jude because my mama loves the Beatles. I was born September 10, 2014! I was in my mamas belly for almost 41 weeks. It was warm and cozy in there but it was time to meet the world! I was born at 10:29pm! When I was born my dad noticed the right side of my face was a little red. So my parents asked the doctors and they diagnosed me with a port wine stain. By October 29, 2014 the little bit of red on my face had grown so much that my right eye was shutting from the skin around my eye growing. My parents knew something wasn’t right so they called the pediatrician, they said it was normal. They knew something still wasn’t right. We had gone to a Thorough Ophthalmologist and wasn’t 100% sold on me having a port wine stain. So my parents called the plastic surgeon that was monitoring me. When they called the doctor was on vacation but the nurses made my parents send a photo of my port wine stain and they sent it to the doctor. Within a couple hours the doctor re-diagnosed me with a hemangioma and we went to go see a dermatologist, cardiologist, ophthalmologist and neurologist. With the position of my hemangioma the doctors needed to check my brain, eyes, heart and breathing to make sure none of them were affected. I am very lucky none of them were affected. I was cleared to go on a medicine called propranolol, a blood thinner that helped my hemangioma shrink. I also had 7 laser treatments to help with the redness. I was on propranolol until I was 22 months old.
I’m very lucky to have such strong advocating parents. Propranolol was only discovered 13 years ago because a child who had heart issues also had a hemangioma and it began to shrink. I responded very well on the propranolol and was asked to be part of a case study at chop. I’m almost 3 1/2 years old now and I love to dance, sing and I’m very social. I still have a little bit of redness on my face but I’m proud of my birth mark, it’s part of me.
